obama yesterday. after spending two days with brian williams the president asked for one more minute. it was that compass idea. this compass idea that president obama went out of his way to make sure he said there. the idea of the president having a compass that is true. that is basically the idea of character, of integrity. it's the idea of personal authenticity to an extent. that you know what a person stands for. that you know that person will stand for those things even when it's hard. because it is who they truly are. this is more than just being likable. this is the idea of personal substance that you can be counted on to do the right thing because you are who you say you are. you are not acting. this is a sort of intangible currency that campaigns are always competing for at every level. but it's particularly so at the end of big races where the people who haven't been persuaded by the more overt arguments and policy differences are the ones who are going to make the final decision. at the end of the day people who have no reason to vote one way or the other will vote for who they

away at president obama for not being tough on china. not the way that he mitt romney would be tough on china. but the company mr. romney chose for his backdrop that day, the company that he chose to implicitly help make that case so happened to be a poster child for success by president obama in getting tough on china. in 2009 in the first months of president obama's presidency, american spring wire joined with two other makers to ask for help. china was unfairly dumping steel wire in the united states market at artificial low prices. they asked for help. the commerce department said they would investigate and the commerce department did move to protect american spring wire. they cracked down on china for dumping their underpriced product. thus the company was benefitted. they got the help they wanted. a company that was then used as a backdrop for mitt romney saying president obama had not been tough on china. today mr. romney gave a major address on economic policy. this is part of his closing argument for the presidency. he delivered the speech at a company called kinsler constru

governor romney gets the state of iowa on election day. the president would still be at 265 with ohio and wisconsin, then he just needs five more. new hampshire would give him four so that's not big enough. but obama campaign increasingly thinks the latino vote in nevada would do it. that would put the president over the top there. if he didn't get nevada for some reason, the president's options would be colorado, virginia, new hampshire or florida. the president with an easier path. what about governor romney. let's leave this one blue. can governor romney get there if ohio is going blue. can romney get all the way to 270 when the president's already at 275. well, he would have to win florida, he would have to win virginia. then you're at 255, 254. he would have to win colorado. that would put him in play at 263. then from there, how does governor romney get over the top? he would if he won wisconsin, paul ryan's home state. 10 electoral votes right there. logic being if the president's winning ohio, these are two very similar states. so wisconsin would be one model and let's just sa

in north carolina. in 2008, 51% of the electorate voted before election day. essentially, obama won the election before election day. john mccain won the election day vote but obama had already won the election in the early voting period. we have already had 1 million people voted north carolina. -- voters in north carolina. at this point, the democrats are doing better on the early voting, it appears. we don't have a vote count so we don't know exactly what the tally is. if you look at things -- we know things like number of active americans who have voted and that is up from the percentage who voted in 2008. percentage is greater this time at this juncture that was in 2008. the number of younger voters who tend to be more for obama than for running a, a greater percentage is up this time compared to 2008. those are all good signs for the obama campaign. but, what that will mean at the end, we don't know but the obama campaign had a good signal from that. host: we have a chart from an article in the "atlantic." it talks about absentee ballot request in north carolina. host: the dem
